Secretly, but not so secretly, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year.
It is the most ordinary of holidays, in my opinion, because it just revolves around gathering the table with great people, appreciating the little things in life. Even Thanksgiving food is simple in nature. It's all of these things that make it the most extraordinary (and maybe the most American) holiday out of all of them.
This was probably the most apparent during the four Thanksgivings I spent abroad. In Beijing, I watched Brits bring over hush puppies while the rest of us chipped in for the most expensive turkey of all time. In Hong Kong, I bought all of my favorite things: ham, sushi, cake and stuffed myself until I threw up.
The one year I came home, my family insisted on an Asian Thanksgiving. Upset that I just flew 10,000 miles for this, I bought a pumpkin pie and turkey at Costco in protest, only to watch everyone devour it at home.
