So, you've booked the flights, packed the bags, and triple-checked the passport. But wait-who's going to take care of the furry overlord while you're sipping cocktails?
Finding the right pet sitter isn't about hiring someone to refill the kibble bowl. It doesn't matter if you have a dignified senior cat who demands meals on a precise schedule or a hyperactive pup who thinks every person is their new best friend, choosing the right caretaker can make all the difference.
Before you book the first name that pops up on Rover (which does do background checks), let's talk about what makes a great pet sitter - and how to ensure your little dude is in the best hands possible while you're away.
(In another life, I spend time boarding cats and walking dogs! I also have been doing it for the past ten years or so, because my travel schedule prohibits me from having a pet. 🤷)
Hopefully, you only have to do this once-don't forget that as much Chairman Meow is staying with Linda, Linda is also staying with Chairman Meow in her own home, and it is imperative that they get along!
A good pet sitter will ask for a meet-and-greet
If you don't have a family member or relative who's willing to step in, then it is off to hire a professional pet sitter.
Though it is tempting to tick off boarding as an item on the to-do list-especially if your animal is well-behaved-it is better to be safe than sorry when there's an emergency when you are 3,000 miles away.
Trust us, though when we say that this is the best option for most pet parents: A boarding facility or a boarding kennel may not offer as much playtime or individualized attention!
Keep in mind, in the pet sitters' mind, all owners and animals are different. (An elementary school teacher manages a lot of personalities! It's just like that.)
In short, most good pet sitters will not automatically accept a booking. Experienced pet sitters will ask for a meet-and-greet. Boarding services will also do the same!
Meet-and-greets are essentially low-key pet interviews, where the pet sitter will meet the cat or dog before booking to ensure it is a good fit. It lets the caretaker see any behavioral issues, talk through the animal's medical history, and lets them tell the owner how they like to operate (i.e., for instance, I do not let any animal I board to sleep with me).
It is also your opportunity to tell them how Kitty Purry enjoys the zoomies at night! Meets-and-greets can also help acclimatize the pet, letting them see their owner and pet sitter together.
Providing instructions and explaining Fido's specific needs will go a long way to make the process as smooth as possible. This is the time to have the pet sitter checklist ready and ask all the important questions too.
Though some pet sitters are willing to provide supplies (such as litter box, litter, food, treats, leashes, etc.), expect to provide everything if you're working with an independent pet sitter versus a boarding service (it is more personalized service for a fraction of the price!).
Some animals also prefer their own toys, blankets, food and don't like too much change! Routine is a real thing.
Make sure Fido's vaccinations are all up-to-date
It's a whole laundry list. Sorry.
In general, be prepared to provide a full medical history if possible. Generally, a good pet sitter wants to know if the animals are up-to-date on their shots, have been neutered or spayed, if they're free of fleas-hey, you never know-and for cats, trimmed nails.
Plus, behavioral history around other animals, people and/or children.
Have a backup plan: Provide the pet sitter with all the necessary contact information, like the veterinarian's phone number, an emergency contact, and medication instructions.
If Mr. Wigglebutt has a microchip, let the pet sitter know as well. This reduces worry and gives peace of mind to everyone included, and can significantly reduce separation anxiety for you (or your pet).

Finding the right pet sitter isn't just about convenience-it's about trust, communication, and making sure your furry buddy gets the attention they deserve. A thorough meet-and-greet, clear instructions, and a well-prepared pet sitter can make all the difference.
