When It’s Okay To Get Away With Not Tipping the Maid

    Published/Updated: Jul 1, 2025 · Erica Ho · Under a minute read

Watching the wallet a little bit, eh? Thanks to one of our readers, here's how to skimp on tipping without actually being a complete douchebag.

Drivers, bellboys, maids, and room service - let's face it, it can all get expensive spreading the love around pretty quickly. Tipping culture or not, you probably should do it. But if you just want to avoid the maid, all you have to do is flip the "Do not disturb" sign and hang it outside for the duration of your stay. It's simple: No cleaning, no tip. Guilt-free.

Though at the end of the day, most of these dudes are probably grossly underpaid and underappreciated in the general scheme of hospitality. They're cleaning up after your junk, so how hard is it to spare a couple of cents? Or just do it yourself.
