From Hotel to Home: The Hotel Shower Cap Is the Kitchen Essential You Need

    Published/Updated: Jul 16, 2026 · Erica Ho · Under a minute read

Don't believe the Internet. We figured it out first (but then it just didn't get the Google juice it needed).

It took me a long time to admit that the hotel shower cap is useful. Don't write it off: It may just be the most useful kitchen gadget out there - and it's free.

Shower caps don't seem life-changing, but they are a perfect solution for anytime you want to cover food with saran wrap. (Hot tip: This also works in the hotel room! Airbnbs got nothing on this.)

They are arguably more useful than saran wrap, because they are reusable.

Hotel shower caps are usually my preference for covering cookies and proofing bread-yes, I am a bread baker!-and one shower cap lasted one or two years before it was time to replace it. Talk about being durable.

(That's plenty of time to travel again, and pick up like, five more! I could probably pick up five in one trip alone. I guess it's possible to purchase them, but why?)

On another note, they are great for covering shoes.
